(Re)Loaded: The All New Dervish Sama Longboard

by Wes Ayers

In redesigning a well-revered longboard, it’s possible to dismiss any and all notions that such a process would be considered “spiritual.” Yet, consider this: “A member of an order noted for devotional exercises involving movements of the body,” known as Dervish, based the foundation towards the initial offering of the Loaded Dervish Longboard. Generation 2 aligns Dervish with Sama  ”the ascent – through meditation – beyond the confines of thought to attain a heightened state of maturity and closeness to God,” creating a 42.8 inch second coming of an otherworldly, bamboo perfected deck.

The all new Dervish Sama is a longboard prodigy , well in touch with its virtuous roots, and a noble drop-through construction predecessor to the flagship model within the Loaded lineup. A widely defined, concave enhanced, flex-ready bamboo platform encompasses the deck’s core – THE mainstay, providing unparalleled responsiveness, controlled balance & comfort to support your trick & ride arsenal. Newly adapted, subtle yet very influential, nose and tail kicks lift this righteous redesign to the capable forefront of progressive freestyle riding. To retain such stability, both neck and drop-through sections are reinforced with sheeted fiberglass to ensure long-term durability. A strategy of epic proportions, the new Dervish Sama incorporates a seemingly abstract yet symmetrical 6-piece grip tape scheme to further sustain the boards unique flex pattern. Completing the Dervish Sama’s evolution towards a heightened state of pure awesomeness is the deck’s whirling dervish theme, now revealed in a slightly more abstract form with equally simplistic appeal – created by Diana Gracida of Nana Studios.

Of course, the path towards an enlightened complete setup depends upon your belief and dedication to a particular style of riding. The standard fit (as in recommended), by which all others may judge infuses 10 inch (180 mm) trucks with 70mm+ wheels, and are subject to specific rider-tweaked modifications. As a believer in all things reconsidered (within the action sports realm), BC Surf & Sport and BCSurf.com now carries the all new Dervish Sama deck and complete longboard setup for your downhill, carving, freestyle whirling enjoyment. And for all you “ol’skoolers” who wish to possess the original testament no longer in production, BC Surf & Sport still has the first generation Dervish in stock – while they last.

112 Days Beyond 1/1/12: BC’s own Lindsay Bell Captures 2nd Place at the Kommona Paddle Race in Miami

by Wes Ayers

There comes a time and a place when a thought becomes an idea and goes beyond the point of question and doubt to define what it means to be determined. Words such as staunch, unwavering and resolve not only could go together  in succession, they can also provide an unfaltering path carved from accomplishing a personal goal explained through overcoming the physical limitations and psychological ramifications of a major injury. And that’s exactly what Lindsay Bell did. “I didn’t doubt that I would be able to race. Yes, my condition was definitely a motivating factor,  because I wanted to prove to myself that I could still do it. As long as I could transfer from the wheelchair to the kayak, my body would be back at home and slip into old routines.,” recalls Ms. Bell, who is also a Web Team Member & SEO Specialist here at BC Surf and Sport. An annual participant in the event, Lindsay knows the race well, but this time had to change how she would go about competing  “I had never kayaked before but I figured it couldn’t be too different from paddleboarding,” she said.

Coincidence? Maybe. As in 112 days following a freak accident on January 1st ( 1/1/12), that left her with a broken ankle accompanying multiple femur and tibia fractures AND unable to walk following 4 major reconstructive surgeries, Ms. Bell (as she is affectionately known), with the help of her good friend Melissa, competed in the Kommona Paddle Race on Miami’s Biscayne Bay. And not only did she complete, she surpassed all expectations she put upon herself by placing second within her respective and highly contentious division. As Ms. Bell remembers it, “Everyone started the race way out in front of us, so we had some catching up to do!” It’s certainly an experience capable of lifting the spirits of anyone willing to compete let alone start from the back of the pack and become a contender to win the race altogether.  “I wanted to prove to myself that I could finish the race,” she said. “And when we made that final turn with friends there to cheer us on, it made me feel better than I had in years! I felt like Lindsay again!” A feeling worth many moments to surely reminisce, yet even more so, to aid in her continuing recovery. Nonetheless, the Kommona Paddle Race was an accomplishment that has made all of us here at BC Surf & Sport extremely proud!

Congratulations Ms. Lindsay Bell!
